Debunking FairMormon - Letter to a CES Director - Polygamy | Polyandry

Utah Mormons responded by providing court affidavits confirming that Joseph Smith was indeed a polygamist. In total, 13 faithful Latter-day Saint women, who were married to Joseph Smith, swore court affidavits that they had sexual relations with him:.

Partridge Smith Young said she 'roomed' with Joseph the night following her marriage to him and said that she had "carnal intercourse" with him. She then told me that I was the daughter of the Prophet Joseph Smith. The DNA research is still ongoing. The DNA research is incomplete.

The DNA evidence has not proven nor has it disproven that Joseph had children with his polygamous wives. The historical record is strong enough for apologists and critics alike to concur that Joseph had at least two children with his plural wives.

But not every case can be solved. A few alleged children of Joseph Smith died as infants and their burial places are not known. Descendants of daughters are particularly difficult to test conclusively because the easy-to-identify Y chromosome signature only works to identify male descendants. FairMormon cannot possibly make the claim that there were no polygamous children from Joseph Smith in light of the fact that several of the cases cannot be solved. In summary, the historical record and evidence is compelling enough for the majority of polygamy scholars — LDS and critics alike — to conclude that Joseph Smith indeed had sexual relations and children with his polygamous wives.

I believe they were legitimate marriages, and as such could easily accommodate righteous marital relations. These married women continued to live as husband and wife with their prior husband after marrying Joseph Most of them lived on to old age. I've already debunked this false claim in my earlier response on this page here.

I corrected "prior" in the CES Letter. I wanted to differentiate between the two husbands but I realize that "prior" can be confusing. In , at age 18, Zina arrived with her parents in Nauvoo after being driven out of Missouri.

At the same time, Joseph Smith had taught Zina the doctrine of plural marriage, and thrice asked her to marry him. She declined each time, and she and Henry were wed 7 March Bennett, then mayor of Nauvoo. They had invited Joseph to perform the ceremony, but Bennett stepped in when Joseph did not arrive: Family tradition holds, then, that Zina and Henry were aware of Joseph's plural marriage teachings and his proposal to Zina.

While this perspective is late and after-the-fact, it is consistent with the Jacobs' behaviour thereafter. Zina's family also wrote that Henry believed that "whatever the Prophet did was right, without making the wisdom of God's authorities bend to the reasoning of any man. She was six months pregnant by Henry, and continued to live with him. Joseph Smith and Brigham Young's "mistreatment" of Henry and their "theft" of his family have received a great deal of publicity, thanks to late 19th century anti-Mormon sources, and Fawn Brodie increased their cachet for a 20th century audience.

These charges are examined in detail here. For present purposes, we will focus on Zina. She had refused Joseph's suit three times, and chosen to marry Henry. Why did she decide to be sealed to Joseph? She made her motivations clear, and explained that God had prepared her mind for Joseph's teachings even before she had heard them: It was something too sacred to be talked about; it was more to me than life or death. I never breathed it for years. I will tell you the facts.

I had dreams—I am no dreamer but I had dreams that I could not account for. I know this is the work of the Lord; it was revealed to me, even when young.

Things were presented to my mind that I could not account for. When Joseph Smith revealed this order [Celestial marriage] I knew what it meant; the Lord was preparing my mind to receive it.

Henry was to stand as proxy for Zina's post-martyrdom sealing to Joseph, and her marriage for time to Brigham Young. He and Zina separated soon thereafter, and Henry was soon gone on one of his many missions for the Church. See here for a more in-depth analysis of attacks on Brigham and Joseph regarding Zina and Henry. Faced with questions from her RLDS interviewer that she felt exceeded propriety, Zina became evasive. She finally terminated the interview by saying, "Mr.

Wight, you are speaking on the most sacred experiences of my life…". This is just a repeat of the same response that FairMormon posted in the Other Concerns section.

You can view my response to the above here. Emma was unaware of most of these marriages. The Saints did not know what was going on behind the scenes as polygamy did not become common knowledge until when Brigham Young revealed it in Utah. Joseph Smith did everything he could to keep the practice in the dark.

It is true that Joseph did not always tell others about plural marriage. He did, however, make some attempt to teach the doctrine to the Saints. Joseph didn't just " not always tell others about plural marriage ". He went much further than that. The secrecy of the marriages and the private and public denials by Joseph Smith are not congruent with honest behavior.

This event initiated a chain of events that led to Carthage. Consider the following denial made by Joseph Smith to Latter-day Saints in Nauvoo in May — a month before his death:. What a thing it is for a man to be accused of committing adultery, and having seven wives, when I can only find one. I am the same man, and as innocent as I was fourteen years ago; and I can prove them all perjurers.

It is a matter of historical fact that Joseph had secretly taken over 30 plural wives by May when he made the above denial that he was ever a polygamist. If you go to Familysearch. In an attempt to influence and abate public rumors of his secret polygamy, Joseph got 31 witnesses to sign an affidavit published in the LDS October 1, Times and Seasons stating that Joseph did not practice polygamy.

The problem with this affidavit is that it was signed by several people who were secret polygamists or who knew that Joseph was a polygamist at the time they signed the affidavit.

In fact, Eliza R. Joseph and Eliza were married 3 months earlier on June 29, The point I was making was illustrating how if polygamy is really about "multiplying and replenshing the earth", why didn't God command Adam and Noah to command their direct descendants to practice polygamy for the purpose in increasing the population?

No such command was given. Obviously, this command would apply to their descendants over the next thousand or so years as there were only a limited number of individuals in the beginning. This is what I meant but I was unclear as to how I defined "immediate". I have removed this from the CES Letter.

To me, it's not a big issue relative to the problems of Joseph Smith's polygamy and polyandry. My above response is based on FairMormon's Born and raised in Southern California, Jeremy is a seventh generation Mormon of Pioneer heritage who reached every Mormon youth milestone. In February , Jeremy experienced an awakening to the LDS Church's truth crisis, which subsequently led to a faith transition that summer.

In the spring of , Jeremy was approached and asked by a CES Director to share his questions and concerns about the LDS Church's origins, history, and current practices.

The CES Director responded that he read the "very well written" letter and that he would provide Jeremy with a response. No response ever came. A comprehensive critique of each essay is available here on MormonThink. The Book of Abraham: The Sky is Falling — Part 1. CES Letter Foundation is a c 3 nonprofit organization whose mission it is to liberate and empower doubting LDS individuals and mixed-faith marriages. Brief Summary Donut Chart Official LDS Essay Response Joseph Smith was married to at least 34 women Of those 34 women, 11 of them were married women of other living men Apostle Orson Hyde who was sent on his mission when Joseph secretly married his wife, Marinda Hyde Joseph was years-old when he married year-old Helen Mar Kimball Among the women was a mother-daughter set and three sister sets Some of the marriages to these women included Brief Summary Polygamy Polyandry.

Donut Chart Polygamy Polyandry. Jeremy's Detailed Response Polygamy Polyandry. The author correctly notes that "Joseph Smith was married to at least 34 women". The great and glorious principle of plural marriage was first revealed to Joseph Smith in , but being forbidden to make it public, or to teach it as a doctrine of the Gospel, at that time, he confided the facts to only a very few of his intimate associates. Among them were Oliver Cowdery and Lyman E.

Johnson, the latter confiding the fact to his traveling companion, Elder Orson Pratt, in the year See Orson Pratt's testimony. Was Joseph Smith, Jr. Joseph Smith introduced and practiced plural marriage. The proofs of this are abundant and complete. Of those 34 women, 11 of them were married women of other living men.

Of the eight well-documented cases, five of the husbands were Latter-day Saints, and the other three were either not active in or not associated with the Church.

In all cases, these women continued to live with their husbands, most of them doing so until their husbands died. These eternal marriages appear to have had little effect upon the lives of the women involved, with the exception that they would be sealed to Joseph in the afterlife rather than to their earthly husbands.

The available evidence also does not support the claim that Joseph had intimate relations with these married women. To date, DNA analysis has ruled out Joseph Smith as the father of any of the children of the women to whom he was sealed who were married to other men. In , Sylvia Sessions Lyon's daughter, Josephine, signed a statement that in Sylvia "told me that I was the daughter of the Prophet Joseph Smith, she having been sealed to the Prophet at the time that her husband Mr.

Lyon was out of fellowship with the Church. Hales demonstrates that Sylvia considered herself divorced prior to marrying Joseph polygamously. Church responds through The Joseph Smith Papers: Several later documents suggest that several women who were already married to other men were, like Marinda Hyde, married or sealed to Joseph Smith.

At least three of the women reportedly involved in these marriages—Patty Bartlett Sessions, Ruth Vose Sayers, and Sylvia Porter Lyon—are mentioned in the journal, though in contexts very much removed from plural marriage. Having surveyed the available sources, historian Richard L. Bushman concludes that these polyandrous marriages—and perhaps other plural marriages of Joseph Smith—were primarily a means of binding other families to his for the spiritual benefit and mutual salvation of all involved.

FairMormon also provides a chart listing some of the married women here. It is claimed that Apostle Orson Hyde who was sent on a mission to dedicate Israel so that Joseph Smith could secretly marry his wife, Marinda Hyde, while he was away. Nancy married future apostle Orson Hyde on 4 September He was involved briefly with apostasy at Far West in the fall of , but had returned to the Church by March following a dramatic vision in which he saw the consequence of continued rebellion.

Marinda was sealed to Joseph in April , while Orson was on a mission. Only antagonistic accounts of this sealing exist. It is of note that Orson had been on his mission for about a year before the sealing--he departed on 15 April , and would return 7 December This long delay does not fit well with the claim that a sexually-aggressive Joseph simply wanted his male rivals out of the way.

Unique to the Hyde's marriage is the fact that Marinda was sealed to Orson following Joseph's death. All of the Prophet's other polyandrous wives were posthumously sealed to Joseph by proxy. Much of what we know about the Hyde sealing is also contaminated by hostile, mutually contradictory accounts that contain some known false information.

For example, it was thought that a typical female-bodied person who is attracted to female-bodied persons would have masculine attributes, and vice versa. Transgender and cisgender people may be attracted to men, women or both, although the prevalence of different sexual orientations is quite different in these two populations see sexual orientation of transwomen.

An individual homosexual, heterosexual or bisexual person may be masculine, feminine, or androgynous , and in addition, many members and supporters of lesbian and gay communities now see the "gender-conforming heterosexual" and the "gender-nonconforming homosexual" as negative stereotypes.

However, studies by J. Michael Bailey and K. Zucker have found that a majority of gay men and lesbians report being gender-nonconforming during their childhood years. Reliable data as to the size of the gay and lesbian population are of value in informing public policy. Measuring the prevalence of homosexuality presents difficulties. It is necessary to consider the measuring criteria that are used, the cutoff point and the time span taken to define a sexual orientation.

The research must measure some characteristic that may or may not be defining of sexual orientation. The number of people with same-sex desires may be larger than the number of people who act on those desires, which in turn may be larger than the number of people who self-identify as gay, lesbian, or bisexual.

A study by the CDC in which over 34, Americans were interviewed, puts the percentage of lesbians and gays at 1. In October , Gallup started conducting annual surveys to study the demographics of LGBT people, determining that 3. In recognition of the scientific evidence, [] the American Psychiatric Association removed homosexuality from the DSM in , stating that "homosexuality per se implies no impairment in judgment, stability, reliability, or general social or vocational capabilities.

Thus, mental health professionals and researchers have long recognized that being homosexual poses no inherent obstacle to leading a happy, healthy, and productive life, and that the vast majority of gay and lesbian people function well in the full array of social institutions and interpersonal relationships.

The longstanding consensus of research and clinical literature demonstrates that same-sex sexual and romantic attractions, feelings, and behaviors are normal and positive variations of human sexuality. The Chinese Society of Psychiatry removed homosexuality from its Chinese Classification of Mental Disorders in after five years of study by the association.

However, the experiences of discrimination in society and possible rejection by friends, families and others, such as employers, means that some LGB people experience a greater than expected prevalence of mental health difficulties and substance misuse problems.

Although there have been claims by conservative political groups in the USA that this higher prevalence of mental health difficulties is confirmation that homosexuality is itself a mental disorder, there is no evidence whatever to substantiate such a claim. Most lesbian, gay, and bisexual people who seek psychotherapy do so for the same reasons as heterosexual people stress, relationship difficulties, difficulty adjusting to social or work situations, etc. Whatever the issue, there is a high risk for anti-gay bias in psychotherapy with lesbian, gay, and bisexual clients.

The appropriate application of affirmative psychotherapy is based on the following scientific facts: Although scientists favor biological models for the cause of sexual orientation, [3] they do not believe that it is the result of any one factor. They generally believe that it is determined by biological and environmental factors ; they state that most people's sexual orientation is determined at an early age, and sexual orientation development involves a complex interplay between nature and nurture.

The American Academy of Pediatrics stated in Pediatrics in Research into the causes of homosexuality plays a role in political and social debates and also raises concerns about genetic profiling and prenatal testing. Despite numerous attempts, no "gay gene" has been identified. However, there is substantial evidence for a genetic basis of homosexuality especially in males based on twin studies , with some association with regions of Chromosome 8 and with the Xq28 gene on the X chromosome.

In five regions of the genome the methylation pattern appears very closely linked to sexual orientation. Since homosexuality tends to lower reproductive success, and since there is considerable evidence that human sexual orientation is genetically influenced, it is unclear how it is maintained in the population at a relatively high frequency.

There are no studies of adequate scientific rigor that conclude that sexual orientation change efforts work to change a person's sexual orientation. Those efforts have been controversial due to tensions between the values held by some faith-based organizations, on the one hand, and those held by LGBT rights organizations and professional and scientific organizations and other faith-based organizations, on the other.

Many of these individuals and groups appeared to be embedded within the larger context of conservative religious political movements that have supported the stigmatization of homosexuality on political or religious grounds. No major mental health professional organization has sanctioned efforts to change sexual orientation and virtually all of them have adopted policy statements cautioning the profession and the public about treatments that purport to change sexual orientation.

The American Psychological Association states that "sexual orientation is not a choice that can be changed at will, and that sexual orientation is most likely the result of a complex interaction of environmental, cognitive and biological factors They do, however, encourage gay affirmative psychotherapy.

The American Psychological Association "encourages mental health professionals to avoid misrepresenting the efficacy of sexual orientation change efforts by promoting or promising change in sexual orientation when providing assistance to individuals distressed by their own or others' sexual orientation and concludes that the benefits reported by participants in sexual orientation change efforts can be gained through approaches that do not attempt to change sexual orientation".

Scientific research has been generally consistent in showing that lesbian and gay parents are as fit and capable as heterosexual parents, and their children are as psychologically healthy and well-adjusted as children reared by heterosexual parents. Patterson for the American Psychological Association found that the available data did not suggest higher rates of homosexuality among the children of lesbian or gay parents.

The terms " men who have sex with men " MSM and " women who have sex with women " WSW refer to people who engage in sexual activity with others of the same sex regardless of how they identify themselves—as many choose not to accept social identities as lesbian, gay and bisexual.

The terms are seen as problematic by some, however, because they "obscure social dimensions of sexuality; undermine the self-labeling of lesbian, gay, and bisexual people; and do not sufficiently describe variations in sexual behavior". In contrast to its benefits, sexual behavior can be a disease vector. Safe sex is a relevant harm reduction philosophy. These safer sex recommendations are agreed upon by public health officials for women who have sex with women to avoid sexually transmitted infections STIs:.

These safer sex recommendations are agreed upon by public health officials for men who have sex with men to avoid sexually transmitted infections:. When it was first described in medical literature, homosexuality was often approached from a view that sought to find an inherent psychopathology as its root cause.

Much literature on mental health and homosexual patients centered on their depression , substance abuse , and suicide.

Although these issues exist among people who are non-heterosexual , discussion about their causes shifted after homosexuality was removed from the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual DSM in Instead, social ostracism, legal discrimination, internalization of negative stereotypes, and limited support structures indicate factors homosexual people face in Western societies that often adversely affect their mental health. Gay and lesbian youth bear an increased risk of suicide, substance abuse, school problems, and isolation because of a "hostile and condemning environment, verbal and physical abuse, rejection and isolation from family and peers".

Suggested reasons for this disparity are that 1 LGBT youths may be specifically targeted on the basis of their perceived sexual orientation or gender non-conforming appearance, and 2 that "risk factors associated with sexual minority status, including discrimination, invisibility, and rejection by family members Higher rates of family rejection were significantly associated with poorer health outcomes.

On the basis of odds ratios, lesbian, gay, and bisexual young adults who reported higher levels of family rejection during adolescence were 8. Crisis centers in larger cities and information sites on the Internet have arisen to help youth and adults.

Most nations do not prohibit consensual sex between unrelated persons above the local age of consent. Some jurisdictions further recognize identical rights, protections, and privileges for the family structures of same-sex couples, including marriage. Some countries and jurisdictions mandate that all individuals restrict themselves to heterosexual activity and disallow homosexual activity via sodomy laws.

Offenders can face the death penalty in Islamic countries and jurisdictions ruled by sharia. There are, however, often significant differences between official policy and real-world enforcement. Although homosexual acts were decriminalized in some parts of the Western world , such as Poland in , Denmark in , Sweden in , and the England and Wales in , it was not until the mids that the gay community first began to achieve limited civil rights in some developed countries.

During the s and s, most developed countries enacted laws decriminalizing homosexual behavior and prohibiting discrimination against lesbian and gay people in employment, housing, and services. On the other hand, many countries today in the Middle East and Africa, as well as several countries in Asia, the Caribbean and the South Pacific, outlaw homosexuality.

In , the Supreme Court of India upheld Section of the Indian Penal Code which criminalized homosexual activity, [] but, in , overturned itself and legalized homosexual activity throughout India.

In the European Union , discrimination of any type based on sexual orientation or gender identity is illegal under the Charter of Fundamental Rights of the European Union. Since the s, many LGBT people in the West, particularly those in major metropolitan areas, have developed a so-called gay culture.

To many, [ who? Yet not all LGBT people choose to participate in "queer culture", and many gay men and women specifically decline to do so. To some [ who? With the outbreak of AIDS in the early s, many LGBT groups and individuals organized campaigns to promote efforts in AIDS education, prevention, research, patient support, and community outreach, as well as to demand government support for these programs. The death toll wrought by the AIDS epidemic at first seemed to slow the progress of the gay rights movement, but in time it galvanized some parts of the LGBT community into community service and political action, and challenged the heterosexual community to respond compassionately.

Stories from the Quilt Publicly gay politicians have attained numerous government posts, even in countries that had sodomy laws in their recent past. LGBT movements are opposed by a variety of individuals and organizations.

Some social conservatives believe that all sexual relationships with people other than an opposite-sex spouse undermine the traditional family [] and that children should be reared in homes with both a father and a mother. Policies and attitudes toward gay and lesbian military personnel vary widely around the world.

Some countries allow gay men, lesbians, and bisexual people to serve openly and have granted them the same rights and privileges as their heterosexual counterparts. Many countries neither ban nor support LGB service members. A few countries continue to ban homosexual personnel outright.

Most Western military forces have removed policies excluding sexual minority members. Of the 26 countries that participate militarily in NATO , more than 20 permit openly gay, lesbian and bisexual people to serve.

The other two generally do not: China bans gay and lesbian people outright, Russia excludes all gay and lesbian people during peacetime but allows some gay men to serve in wartime see below. Israel is the only country in the Middle East region that allows openly LGB people to serve in the military. While the question of homosexuality in the military has been highly politicized in the United States, it is not necessarily so in many countries. Generally speaking, sexuality in these cultures is considered a more personal aspect of one's identity than it is in the United States.

According to American Psychological Association , empirical evidence fails to show that sexual orientation is germane to any aspect of military effectiveness including unit cohesion , morale, recruitment and retention.

Societal acceptance of non-heterosexual orientations such as homosexuality is lowest in Asian and African countries, and is highest in Europe, Australia, and the Americas. Western society has become increasingly accepting of homosexuality since the s. In , Professor Amy Adamczyk contended that these cross-national differences in acceptance can be largely explained by three factors: The institution of marriage offers social, psychological, and health benefits that are denied to same-sex couples.

By denying same-sex couples the right to marry, the state reinforces and perpetuates the stigma historically associated with homosexuality. Homosexuality remains stigmatized, and this stigma has negative consequences. California's prohibition on marriage for same-sex couples reflects and reinforces this stigma". Though the relationship between homosexuality and religion is complex, current authoritative bodies and doctrines of the world's largest religions view homosexual behaviour negatively.

This can range from quietly discouraging homosexual activity, to explicitly forbidding same-sex sexual practices among adherents and actively opposing social acceptance of homosexuality. Some teach that homosexual desire itself is sinful, [] others state that only the sexual act is a sin, [] others are completely accepting of gays and lesbians , [] while some encourage homosexuality. On the other hand, voices exist within many of these religions that view homosexuality more positively, and liberal religious denominations may bless same-sex marriages.

Some view same-sex love and sexuality as sacred, and a mythology of same-sex love can be found around the world. Gay bullying can be the verbal or physical abuse against a person who is perceived by the aggressor to be lesbian , gay , bisexual or transgender, including persons who are actually heterosexual or of non-specific or unknown sexual orientation.

In the US, teenage students heard anti-gay slurs such as "homo", "faggot" and "sissy" about 26 times a day on average, or once every 14 minutes, according to a study by Mental Health America formerly National Mental Health Association. In many cultures, homosexual people are frequently subject to prejudice and discrimination.

These attitudes tend to be due to forms of homophobia and heterosexism negative attitudes , bias, and discrimination in favor of opposite-sex sexuality and relationships. Heterosexism can include the presumption that everyone is heterosexual or that opposite-sex attractions and relationships are the norm and therefore superior. Homophobia is a fear of, aversion to, or discrimination against homosexual people. It manifests in different forms, and a number of different types have been postulated, among which are internalized homophobia, social homophobia, emotional homophobia, rationalized homophobia, and others.

When such attitudes manifest as crimes they are often called hate crimes and gay bashing. Negative stereotypes characterize LGB people as less romantically stable, more promiscuous and more likely to abuse children, but there is no scientific basis to such assertions. Gay men and lesbians form stable, committed relationships that are equivalent to heterosexual relationships in essential respects.

LGBT people, especially lesbians, may become the victims of " corrective rape ", a violent crime with the supposed aim of making them heterosexual. In certain parts of the world, LGBT people are also at risk of " honor killings " perpetrated by their families or relatives. Homosexual and bisexual behaviors occur in a number of other animal species.

Such behaviors include sexual activity , courtship , affection , pair bonding , and parenting , [17] and are widespread; a review by researcher Bruce Bagemihl shows that homosexual behavior has been documented in about species, ranging from primates to gut worms. The motivations for and implications of these behaviors have yet to be fully understood, since most species have yet to be fully studied. A review paper by N. Bailey and Marlene Zuk looking into studies of same-sex sexual behaviour in animals challenges the view that such behaviour lowers reproductive success, citing several hypotheses about how same-sex sexual behavior might be adaptive; these hypotheses vary greatly among different species.

Bailey and Zuk also suggest future research needs to look into evolutionary consequences of same-sex sexual behaviour, rather than only looking into origins of such behaviour. Delivering Culturally Competent Nursing Care. Retrieved February 10, But why should we take Joseph's word for it? He is known to have lied to others, including his wife, Emma, about many aspects of polygamy such as hiding the entire idea of polygamy from his wife, Emma, and the fact that he had already married other women without Emma knowing.

Why not lie to another one of his wives if it served his purposes? See our section below about Joseph lying about polygamy. Heber must have learned about polygamy from Joseph first before he taught the principle to Helen. As far as the time line goes, if Heber is the one who had the idea, within a 24 hour period he would have had teach Helen about it, show up unannounced and explain the proposition to Joseph, then have Joseph show up the following day at the Kimball's to convince Helen that if she followed this plan that her father concocted, her father's family would be blessed.

Such a scenario on such short notice is unconvincing. Joseph taught Heber about polygamy at some point before Heber mentioned it to Helen. It could very well be that Joseph at that time mentioned his desire to have Helen as his wife. It stands to reason that as prophet, Joseph chose who he would enter into a polygamous relationship. There are no other examples of a person approaching the prophet and instigating a polygamous relationship.

Finally, it was not unheard of for Joseph to have someone else to ask for, or convince, his intended bride on his behalf, such as in the case of Zina Diantha Huntington as revealed in an interview with her:.

How, then, could you have been sealed to Joseph Smith without first having heard the doctrine of plural marriage? My brother Dimick told me what Joseph had told him.

I knew it was from the Lord, and I received it. Joseph did not come until afterward. You mean by that, then, that after your brother Dimick had returned to Joseph and given him the information that you had accepted such teaching, that Joseph then came to you, prior to having been sealed, and taught you the doctrine of plural marriage? I told you that the Lord had revealed to Joseph Smith that he was to marry me. I received it from Joseph through my brother Dimick.

John Wight, "Evidence from Zina D. There is no reason not to believe that it was Joseph's idea all along to marry Helen, yet there is no way of knowing for sure who is the instigator.

The most important aspect from the discussion above concerning whose idea it was to marry off Helen pinpoints what we believe is the most problematic issue regarding Helen's "marriage" to Joseph: I had not been married scarcely five minutes, and made one proclamation of the Gospel, before it was reported that I had seven wives.

I mean to live and proclaim the truth as long as I can. This new holy prophet [William Law] has gone to Carthage and swore that I had told him that I was guilty of adultery. Why, a man does not speak or wink, for fear of being accused of this…I wish the grand jury would tell me who they are—whether it will be a curse or blessing to me.

I am quite tired of the fools asking me…What a thing it is for a man to be accused of committing adultery, and having seven wives, when I can only find one. No, not at the same time. But they believe that if their companion dies, they have a right to marry again. But we do disapprove of the custom which has gained in the world, and has been practiced among us, to our great mortification, of marrying in five or six weeks, or even in two or three months after the death of their companion. We believe that due respect ought to be had, to the memory of the dead, and the feelings of both friends and children.

Also found in Elder's Journal , Vol 1, No. On Dec 16, Joseph Smith wrote a letter to the church from Liberty Jail which included the following:. Was it for committing adultery that we were assailed? We are aware that that false slander has gone abroad, for it has been reiterated in our ears.

These are falsehoods also. The world hates them, and we sometimes think that the devil ought to be ashamed of them. We have heard that it is reported by some, that some of us should have said, that we not only dedicated our property, but our families also to the Lord; and Satan, taking advantage of this, has perverted it into licentiousness, such as a community of wives, which is an abomination in the sight of God.

History of the Church Vol. As we have lately been credibly informed, that an Elder of the Church of Jesus Christ, of Latter day Saints, by the name of Hiram Brown, has been preaching Polygamy, and other false and corrupt doctrines, in the county of Lapeer, state of Michigan.

This is to notify him and the Church in general, that he has been cut off from the church, for his iniquity; and he is further notified to appear at the Special Conference, on the 6th of April next, to make answer to these charges. By the time Smith had dismissed Bennett in the summer of , Smith had taken the following "spiritual wives" for himself in Nauvoo:.

That's twelve women documented as Joseph Smith's plural wives, during the period in which Smith placed responsibility for the entire polygamy practice on Bennett. In a speech at the temple, on February 21, where many of his "plural wives" were in attendance , Smith had the audacity to state the following:. There is a great noise in the city…and many are saying there cannot be so much smoke without some fire.

Well, be it so. If the stories about Joe Smith are true, then the stories of John C. Bennett are true about the ladies of Nauvoo; and he says that the Ladies' Relief Society are all organized of those who are to be the wives of Joseph Smith.

Ladies, you know whether this is true or not. History of the Church , Vol. Because his "plural wives" in the audience had been sworn to secrecy, Smith felt confident enough to stand before them and lie unabashedly. Emily Dow Partridge, for instance, testified that she and her sister were married to Joseph without Emma's consent emphasis added:. We had been there about a year when the principle of plural marriage was made known to us, and I was married to Joseph Smith on the 4th of March , Elder Heber C.

Kimball performing the ceremony. My sister Eliza was also married to Joseph a few days later. This was done without the knowledge of Emma Smith. Two months afterward she consented to give her husband two wives, providing he would give her the privilege of choosing them. She accordingly chose my sister Eliza and myself, and to save family trouble Brother Joseph thought it best to have another ceremony performed. Accordingly on the 11th of May, , we were sealed to Joseph Smith a second time, in Emma's presence,… From that very hour, however, Emma was our bitter enemy.

We remained in the family several months after this, but things went from bad to worse until we were obligated to leave the house and find another home. Historical Record , Vol.

Notice how Joseph sought to cover up the fact that he was already married to Eliza and Emily Partridge. The Mormon author John J. Brodie included a list of 48 women who may have been married to Joseph Smith.

Ivins, who was considered to be "one of the great authorities on Mormon polygamy," said that the number of Joseph Smith's wives "can only be guessed at, but it might have gone as high as sixty or more. Moreover, a great many distinguished women in history, including several Catholic saints, were also sealed to Joseph Smith in Utah. Widtsoe admitted that "Women no longer living, whether in Joseph's day or later, have also been sealed to the Prophet for eternity.

Joseph went to great lengths to conceal his practice of plural marriage. Michael Marquardt discovered that he even had a pretended marriage performed to cover up his own marriage to Sarah Ann Whitney. On July 27,, Joseph gave a revelation to Newel K. Whitney, that he was to seal his daughter, Sarah Ann, "to Joseph Smith, to be his wife.

Kingsbury and Heber C. Kimball, Marquardt reveals how he uncovered the fact that Joseph Smith actually performed a "pretended" marriage ceremony between Sarah Ann Whitney and Joseph C.

Kingsbury so that his own relationship with her would not be noticed. Marquardt cited the following from "The History of Joseph C. Kingsbury," a document that is now in the Western Americana section of the University of Utah Library:. According to the diary of Joseph's private secretary, William Clayton, Smith would even go so far as to initiate a fake excommunication from the Church to make it appear that he did not believe in polygamy:.

J…began to tell me that E. William Clayton's Diary , Oct. Would God command Joseph to secretly take his wife's fellow presidency members in the Nauvoo Relief Society as well as many others as his own plural wives? Could it be proper or Godly for Joseph to publicly deny such behaviors and privately practice them? Would a true prophet ever secretly take other men's wives because of his position, stating that he was either testing the faith of their husbands, or offering these women a greater chance for exaltation in the eternities because of his position of authority?

It is well documented that Joseph married several women before telling Emma. Would it be proper to keep such information from his own wife?

Carmon Hardy, Solemn Covenant: The Mormon Polygamous Passage , p. In addition to the public denials of polygamy by Joseph Smith himself, many public denials were done by his close associates.

Joseph's Brother Hyrum had an article published in the Times and Seasons in March of italics in original:. I say unto you that that man teaches false doctrine , for there is no such doctrine taught here; neither is there any such thing practiced here.

And any man that is found teaching privately or publicly any such doctrine, is culpable, and will stand a chance to be brought before the High Council, and lose his license and membership also: Remember that Hyrum who had plural wives at the time of this article was the one who took the copy of the polygamy revelation to Emma Smith to try to convince her to accept the idea of polygamy.

So the Church's own current scriptures say that Joseph Smith was practicing polygamy before July 12, Note that even though Bennett had been out of the picture for more than a year, Smith was still publicly calling polygamy a "false and corrupt doctrine. Smith still denied all of it. Joseph successfully inculcated his brother Hyrum into the litany of lies. Note also the utter hypocrisy of Hyrum saying that men caught teaching polygamy were subject to lose their church membership.

Obviously, seeing as how Hyrum and Joseph both were polygamists, his prevarication convicts both of them.

Pratt, in speaking of the means by which church leaders should sustain Smith, advised that "we must lie to protect brother Joseph, it is our duty to do so. Inasmuch as the public mind has been unjustly abused through the fallacy of Dr. Bennett's letters, we make an extract on the subject of marriage, showing the rule of the church on this important matter. The extract is from the Book of Doctrine and Covenants, and is the only rule allowed by the church.

It is not right to persuade a woman to be baptized contrary to the will of her husband neither is it lawful to influence her to leave her husband. According to the custom of all civilized nations, marriage is regulated by laws and ceremonies: Marriage should be celebrated with prayer and thanksgiving; and at the solemnization, the persons to be married, standing together, the man on the right, and the woman on the left, shall be addressed, by the person officiating, as he shall be directed by the holy Spirit; and if there be no legal objections, he shall say, calling each by their names: All legal contracts of marriage made before a person is baptized into this church, should be held sacred and fulfilled.

All children are bound by law to obey their parents; and to influence them to embrace any religious faith, or be baptized, or leave their parents without their consent, is unlawful and unjust. We believe that husbands, parents and masters who exercise control over their wives, children, and servants and prevent them from embracing the truth, will have to answer for that sin. We have given the above rule of marriage as the only one practiced in this church , to show that Dr.

Bennett's "secret wife system" is a matter of his own manufacture; and further to disabuse the public ear, and shew that the said Bennett and his misanthropic friend Origen Bachelor, are perpetrating a foul and infamous slander upon an innocent people, and need but be known to be hated and despise.

In support of this position, we present the following certificates: We the undersigned members of the church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and residents of the city of Nauvoo, persons of families do hereby certify and declare that we know of no other rule or system of marriage than the one published from the Book of Doctrine and Covenants , and we give this certificate to show that Dr.

Bennett's "secret wife system" is a creature of his own make as we know of no such society in this place nor never did. We the undersigned members of the ladies' relief society, and married females do certify and declare that we know of no system of marriage being practiced in the church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints save the one contained in the Book of Doctrine and Covenants , and we give this certificate to the public to show that J.

Johnson; Angeline Robinson; Abigail Works. Times And Seasons , Saturday, October 1, , Newel even performed the ceremony. Snow signed the documents and she was married to Joseph Smith in June The next month, Joseph and Hyrum were murdered; but their deaths did not stop the lying about polygamy:.

Note that at the time, several dozen Mormon men were active polygamists, and the "revelation on celestial marriage" had still not been voted on, or accepted as official practiceso Mormon leaders continued their public lies about secret polygamy. We are accused here of polygamy,… and actions the most indelicate, obscene, and disgusting, such that none but a corrupt and depraved heart could have contrived. These things are too outrageous to admit of belief;… I shall content myself by reading our views of chastity and marriage, from a work published by us containing some of the articles of our Faith.

By , Mormon leaders were sharing their lies about polygamy to an international audience. At the time he published his tract, wherein he quoted verbatim from the "Article on Marriage," Taylor had seven wives. A few years later, a Mormon publication admitted that Joseph Smith sinned by taking his plural wives before his "revelation": To have done otherwise, would have been a great transgression.

Of course, at that time, the documentation of the dates of Joseph's plural marriages was only known by a few top Mormons; it was not until LDS historian Andrew Jenson began delving into Church Archives in the 's that the names and dates began to be established.

Few Mormons realized the scope of Smith's polygamy, or that he took plural wives many years before his alleged "revelation. A man that violated this law in the Doctrine and Covenants, edition, until the acceptance of that revelation by the church, violated the law of the church if he practiced plural marriage.

Yes sir, he would have been cut off from the church, I think I should have been if I had. Before the giving of that revelation in if a man married more wives than one who were living at the same time, he would have been cut off from the church. It would have been adultery under the laws of the church and under the laws of the state, too.

The evidence is over-whelming that Joseph and other church leaders lied about practicing polygamy. In the one instance where Smith hinted publicly of an approval of polygamy, it caused such an uproar among church members that he quickly issued a clarification stating that his remarks had referred to "former times," meaning Old Testament events. Not surprisingly, publication of the Peace Maker created a brief furor in Nauvoo.

For nearly six months, the Church had been recovering from the impact of the devastating John C. Bennett apostasy and his series of wild allegations about lurid polygamous debaucheries in the Church.

Bennett's History of the Saints had come out in late September; yet only a month later—seemingly with the authorization of top Mormon leaders—an account defending polygamy was published. A sometimes reliable contemporary source for Nauvoo gossip, Oliver Olney, expressed what must have been a common opinion when he said, "If the pamphlet was not written by the authorities of the Church, it by them was revised in Jacobs [sic] name.

He denied that he had seen it in advance or that he would have printed it had he known its contents. Significantly, however, Smith defended the author's right to publish such opinions. And more importantly, he did not make any criticisms of the extraordinary claims to authority made by the pamphlet—claims that in effect would have threatened to supercede his own leadership. In the tense political situation in Nauvoo following the Bennett fiasco, Joseph Smith had moved to centralize all power in his own hands.

As part of this effort, he had placed the Church press in control of a totally loyal subordinate, John Taylor. Taylor apparently had replaced Ebenezer Robinson in part because of Robinson's hostility to plural marriage.

Probably, as John D. Lee later alleged, the pamphlet was put forward as a "feeler" to test Church opinion but was denied when public reaction proved too unfavorable. There was a book printed at my office, a short time since, written by Udney H. Jacobs, on marriage, without my knowledge; and had I been apprised of it, I should not have printed it ; not that I am opposed to any man enjoying his privileges; but I do not wish to have my name associated with the authors, in such an unmeaning rigmarole of nonsence, folly, and trash.

Times and Seasons 4: Nauvoo Neighbor , Vol. The incident of which the church-owned "Nauvoo Neighbor" speaks, wherein Hyrum Smith presented the "revelation" to the Nauvoo High Council for its sustaining vote, occurred on August 12, That meeting resulted in several council members resigning in disgust. Some of those dissidents were among those who published the "Nauvoo Expositor" in June , which exposed Smith's secret polygamy practice.

Meaning, those men knew very well that Smith and other church leaders were secretly practicing polygamy, and that Hyrum Smith's response that the "revelation" referred to Old Testament times was a lie. MormonThink has a topic devoted to the LDS Church's historical lying, many of which concern polygamy: Lying for the Lord.

From the many statements above it's obvious that Joseph Smith, his brother Hyrum and several other church leaders, that knew about polygamy, lied about it.

Here are some additional related documentation that show that the LDS Church officially condemned the practice of polygamy during the very time Joseph practiced it. Several quotes are very similar or identical because they were repeated in subsequent years and in various church publications.

This is further evidence that the official condemnation of polygamy by the church wasn't just a rare 'error' but was in fact the official church policy at the time. Also note that many of the quotes are from the Times and Seasons which was a church-owned newspaper that Joseph Smith himself served as an editor.

The clerk of every church should keep a record of all marriages solemnized in his branch. All legal contracts of marriage made before a person is baptized into this Church should be held sacred and fulfilled.

Inasmuch as this Church of Christ has been reproached with the crime of fornication and polygamy, we declare that we believe that one man should have one wife, and one woman but one husband, except in the case of death, when either is at liberty to marry again.

That we will have no fellowship whatever with any Elder belonging to the quorums of the Seventies who is guilty of polygamy or any offense of the kind, and who does not in all things conform to the laws of the church contained in the Bible and in the Book of Doctrine and Covenants.

Thou shalt not covet thy neighbor's wife. He that looketh upon a woman to lust after her, hath committed adultery already in his heart…..

It is evident that his character is that of an adulterer of the worst kind…. Some time ago it having been reported to me that some of the most aggravated cases of adultery had been committed upon some previously respectable females in our city….. More than twenty months ago Bennett went to a lady in the city and began to teach her that promiscuous intercourse between the sexes was lawful and no harm in it, and requested the privilege of gratifying his passions…..

Finding this argument ineffectual, he told her that men in higher standing in the church than himself not only sanctioned, but practiced the same deeds; and…said that I both taught and acted in the same manner, but [that I] publicly proclaimed against it in consequence of the prejudice of the people, and for fear of trouble in my own house. By this means he accomplished his designs. The church afterwards publicly withdrew their fellowship from him [John C. Bennett], and his character was published in the 17th number of this paper; since that time he [John C.

Bennett] has published that the conduct of the Saints was bad that Joseph Smith and many others were adulterers, murderers, etc. Among the most conspicuous of these apostates, we would notice a young female who..

Smith and elder B. Young for her victims, and wrote to England that these men had been trying to seduce her, by making her believe that God had given a revelation that men might have two wives…But, for the information of those who might be assailed by those foolish tales about two wives, we would say that no such principle ever existed among the Latter-Day Saints, and ever will ; this is well known to all who are acquainted with our books and actions.

He [Joseph Smith] spoke of the various publications of Bennett and others, and of the prejudices which they had necessarily excited--that the Mormons were charged with sanctioning a community of wives and of goods, with polygamy, and various other enormities, not one word of which is true. Saturday, 25 -- At home, keeping out of the way of expected writs from Carthage. Greene and Almon W. Babbitt, who informed me there were two indictments found against me, one chargine me false swearing on the testimony of Joseph H.

Jackson and Robert D. Foster, and one charging me of polygamy, or something else, on the testimony of William Law, that I told him so! The particulars of which I shall learn hearafter. There was much false swearing before the grand jury. The law of the land and the rules of the church do not allow one man to have more than one wife alive at once.

To condemn unheard, any man or set of men or their principles, on the strength of popular rumor, or the testimony of enemies, would be gross injustice. An impartial investigation should always precede condemnation.

The Latter-day Saints are charged by their enemies, with the blackest crimes. Treason, murder, theft, polygamy, and adultery, are among the many crimes laid to their charge. Under these circumstances, it is but right, that they should be heard in their defence. I shall, therefore, in this communication, briefly examine and refute a few of the charges, for it would need a legion of writers to answer all the lies told about us.

Most of the stories against the Mormons have been propagated by apostates and traitors, who have been generally cut off from the church for their crimes. They publish their lies, and straightway they are believed, and hawked about as awful disclosures, and received by community with trembling and holy horror. It does not require a very sagacious mind to fathom Mr. Rigdon's motive for doing. As to the charge of polygamy, I will quote from the Book of Doctrine and Covenants, which is the subscribed faith of the church and is strictly enforced.

Article of Marriage, sec. No wonder then that apostates rage, or that the fulness of truth revealed again should bring a storm of persecution. There were no statements authorizing the practice of polygamy, plural marriage, or "celestial marriage" in the statements of Joseph Smith and or his disciples.

The LDS church practiced polygamy from It only stopped because Prophet Wilford Woodruff had a revelation in which the divine practice of polygamy was not to be stopped, but to be put on hold.

Critics say what a coincidence that Woodruff got a revelation to stop polygamy while the Government was pursuing polygamists. The Edmunds Act was passed in This enabled the Government to prosecute Mormons who participated in Polygamy and also for 'Unlawful Cohabitation'. The Mormons ignored this law, which was easy considering how isolated they were from everyone else. John Taylor, the third prophet went into hiding when there was a warrant out for his arrest in After a year of hiding, LDS President Taylor, showed the government his defiance of the law by marrying a year-old while he was a whopping 78 years old!

The Government was getting restless with the Saints rebellion by passing the Edmunds-Tucker Bill in This bill would intentionally bankrupt the church because of its polygamy practices. In the Government succeeded in seizing the church's holdings. At this point the fourth president, Woodruff, saw that the Kingdom of God had no choice but to surrender to Washington's demands. The manifesto known as Official Declaration 1 links to the Church's website:.

Following a revelation to Joseph Smith, the practice of plural marriage was instituted among Church members in the early s see section From the s to the s, the United States government passed laws to make this religious practice illegal.

These laws were eventually upheld by the U. After receiving revelation, President Wilford Woodruff issued the following Manifesto, which was accepted by the Church as authoritative and binding on October 6, This led to the end of the practice of plural marriage in the Church. Press dispatches having been sent for political purposes, from Salt Lake City, which have been widely published, to the effect that the Utah Commission, in their recent report to the Secretary of the Interior, allege that plural marriages are still being solemnized and that forty or more such marriages have been contracted in Utah since last June or during the past year, also that in public discourses the leaders of the Church have taught, encouraged and urged the continuance of the practice of polygamy—.

I, therefore, as President of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, do hereby, in the most solemn manner, declare that these charges are false. We are not teaching polygamy or plural marriage, nor permitting any person to enter into its practice, and I deny that either forty or any other number of plural marriages have during that period been solemnized in our Temples or in any other place in the Territory.

One case has been reported, in which the parties allege that the marriage was performed in the Endowment House, in Salt Lake City, in the Spring of , but I have not been able to learn who performed the ceremony; whatever was done in this matter was without my knowledge.

In consequence of this alleged occurrence the Endowment House was, by my instructions, taken down without delay. Inasmuch as laws have been enacted by Congress forbidding plural marriages, which laws have been pronounced constitutional by the court of last resort, I hereby declare my intention to submit to those laws, and to use my influence with the members of the Church over which I preside to have them do likewise.

There is nothing in my teachings to the Church or in those of my associates, during the time specified, which can be reasonably construed to inculcate or encourage polygamy; and when any Elder of the Church has used language which appeared to convey any such teaching, he has been promptly reproved. And I now publicly declare that my advice to the Latter-day Saints is to refrain from contracting any marriage forbidden by the law of the land. I move that, recognizing Wilford Woodruff as the President of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and the only man on the earth at the present time who holds the keys of the sealing ordinances, we consider him fully authorized by virtue of his position to issue the Manifesto which has been read in our hearing, and which is dated September 24th, , and that as a Church in General Conference assembled, we accept his declaration concerning plural marriages as authoritative and binding.

The manifesto wasn't completely written by Woodruff himself. Woodruff presented the document to his counselors, and George Q. Cannon edited it, making it about words or so shorter. Critics say that the manifesto was written "to beat the devil at his own game. Government that was coming down very hard on the Mormons over polygamy. Polygamy continued with a lot of secrecy even among the General Authorities in order to preserve plausible deniability.

Smith issued the so-called "Second Manifesto" which supposedly did what the first one was supposed to do anyway. Some critics go as far as to ask church members why they think that the top GAs aren't secretly practicing polygamy now?

During Joseph's day, they did while denying it publicly, loudly and often. After the manifesto they did also, so what makes them so sure they aren't doing it now? What's different now that wasn't different when Joseph F.

However Brother Quinn was allowed access to the church's private records which he used to accurately document the many post-manifesto polygamous marriages that occurred after As a result, the LDS church excommunicated Quinn in Quinn's essay on post-manifesto polygamy can be found at: Apostle Dallin Oaks acknowledged that he had read Quinn's article on post-Manifesto polygamy, covering the period from into the early 20th century.

Oaks also confessed that the Mormon Church had not, in fact, been honest about its practice of polygamy during that time. He admitted that the case, as laid out by Quinn, was, in fact, true.
